Dorrigo bush pepper leaf and pepper berry are endemic to the Northern Tablelands of NSW.
The berry with its luscious deep purple colour can be used in savoury dishes as well as sweet, adding the berry to dessert such as ice cream or yogurt. Ground bush pepper leaf can be added to olive oil to make a dressing for salads or as a seasoning for meat or vegetable dishes.
Dorrigo bush pepper berry and leaf have 3 times the antioxidants of blueberries and has been used for its antiseptic properties. Dorrigo bush pepper contains the compound polygodial, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, useful for arthritis, asthma and gut irritability. The polygodial properties can protect the stomach lining from pathogens, diseases and inflammatory markers.
The berry and the leaf can also be used to assist in the slow absorption of glucose from the stomach, allowing stabilisation of blood sugar levels.
